Mission Statement
Granite State Appaloosa Association is committed to promote the Appaloosa in all phases of the equine industry in New Hampshire and the New England area, and to generate growth in GSAA through sponsors, marketing and advertising.
A Non-Profit Organization, incorporated in New Hampshire 1970.
Constitution & Bylaws
I. TITLE, LOCATION, AFFILIATION AND PURPOSE
A. The name of the Organization shall be the Granite State Appaloosa Association, Inc. and shall be incorporated in the state of New Hampshire
1. The fiscal year of the GSAA shall begin on the first day of January and end on the last day of December each year.
B. The club is affiliated with the Appaloosa Horse Club of Moscow, Idaho, hereafter known as the ApHC Inc.
C. The club shall be headquartered in the home of the Secretary of the present year.
D. The purpose of the club shall be:
1. Cooperate with and aid the program and functions of the ApHC.
2. Recognize that the parent organization, (ApHC), files, records and issues certificates of registration. The primary function of the club will be to promote interest in the breed in cooperation with the ApHC.
3. Gain proper publicity through the mediums of radio, TV, news papers, magazines, electronic media, etc.
4. Gain breed classes in open state and fair shows and promote regional all breed shows in the state and region.
5. Forward historical data, bloodline records and general information to the Executive Secretary of the ApHC when requested.
6. Make an annual report of the clubs activities with new officers/directors and minutes of the clubs annual meeting include.
II. MEMBERSHIP
A. Any person interested in the Appaloosa breed is eligible to be a member, and need not be a resident of the state of New Hampshire.
B. Annual dues for membership shall be set at the discretion of the Executive Board with a 2/3 vote necessary of Board Members present. A family and/or youth membership automatically registers the youth in the GSAA Youth Association. 1) Annual dues shall be paid with application. 2) Annual dues shall become due on January 1, of each year. 3) Dues paid by members between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, shall be considered paid for that year and the following year.
C. All money received from annual dues will be used for breed promotion and other work in connection with the club.
D. Each member shall have the privilege of one vote, providing he/she is a paid member in good standing for a period of 3 months preceding the annual meeting and the election of officers. Family membership will have two votes, and you must be 18 to vote.
E. Membership is good for one year and will be renewed each year on receipt of the annual dues. In order to remain a member, dues must be paid by March 1st of the current year.
F. Membership is not transferable.
G. If evidence is presented to the Executive Board that a member abusing the privilege of membership or exhibiting conduct that clearly reflects discredit on GSAA or disservice to the membership, the President will appoint a committee of three Directors (not principles in the dispute) to investigate the validity and seriousness of the charges and recommend appropriate action to the Board. The Board must choose to accept and implement the committee's recommendation as presented or to take no action. If the recommendation is revocation of membership, the member will be informed of the charges and be provided an opportunity to appear before the Board and show cause why the membership should not be revoked. Under no circumstances will the charges against any member be disclosed in records of GSAA or announced at any general meeting. The Board and GSAA will be held blameless for any such disclosures.
III. OFFICERS/DIRECTORS
A. The officers of the GSAA will consist of the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The GSAA President and Vice-President must be ApHC members in good standing. All other GSAA club officers should be ApHC members in good standing.
B. Property and affairs of the club shall be directed by the Executive Board, which shall consist of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer Public Relations Director, Youth Director, 4 Territory Directors and Director/Arbitrator (Past President).
C. The Board shall take whatever action is necessary to carry out the work of the club, within the bounds established by these Bylaws. The general membership can reverse or modify any action of the Board by a vote of 2/3 at a general membership meeting. The Board or any member acting at the Boards discretion will not be held responsible for funds already expended as a result of the Board's action, even though that action shall be rescinded by members.
D. The Treasurer shall be responsible for all monies and shall be bonded for the duration office and will sign no check in excess of $100 without approval of the Board unless a budget covering the expense has been established and approved.
E. All officers and directors must be paid members in good standing, but are not required to be a resident of N.H. or own an Appaloosa registered with the ApHC.
F. All officers shall serve for a period of two years and the Director/Arbitrator serves for a period in conjunction with the term of the current President. Directors will serve on a rotating basis; 2 for one year, 2 for two years.
G. The President, Vice President and Directors shall not serve more than two consecutive terms in any one office (deleted 2010). The Secretary and Treasurer's positions may be held for more than two terms upon vote of the membership at the annual meeting (2007).
H. Any officer or director missing two Board meetings in succession, may be required to forfeit their office or director-ship by the Board and the vacancy filled as provided under these Bylaws.
I. If the President is unable to fulfill his/her term of office, the Vice President will serve as Acting President until the next general meeting at which time a person is elected to the Presidency from nominations from the floor. Other offices or vacancies will be filled by an Interim appointment made by the Board until the next general meeting at which time a person is elected from nominations from the floor.
J. The President will act as ex-officio-officer on all committees, elected or appointed, and will be informed of all meetings.
K. Youth Director will be elected by the membership at each annual meeting for a one year term, and will be responsible for guiding the Youth Club and serving on the Board. The Youth Director has full voting rights.
L. Public Relations Director will be elected by the membership at each annual meeting for a one year term, and will be responsible for the publication of the Club's newsletter, arranging for entertainment & informal functions at general membership meetings and seeking out opportunities to promote the Appaloosa and GSAA. The PR Director has full voting rights on the Executive Board.
IV. MEETINGS AND ELECTIONS
A. Regular meetings will be conducted 5 months during the year. Recommended dates are the last Saturday on the months of Jan., April, Sept., Oct., and Nov. Meetings may be cancelled or added at the discretion of the Board.
B. Executive Board meetings will be held a minimum of once each calendar quarter. Additional meetings may be called within 4 days by the President, Vice President or at the request of any 4 directors and attendance is required. Emergency Board meeting may be called at any time, but absences shall not count against Director's attendance.
C. The annual meeting will be the last meeting called in the calendar year.
D. Written notice of the annual meeting and all regular meetings must be mailed to members not less than 10 days prior to the meeting.
E. A quorum for conducting elections or any business of the club shall be 2/3 of the members present.
F. Members must be present in order to vote on all matters (NO Proxies) except that members may vote for officers/directors by absentee ballots. Such ballots must be requested from the Secretary prior to the day of the meeting. Members requesting absentee ballots cannot vote for Officers/Directors at the annual meeting in person unless their absentee ballot is turned in to the Secretary clearly marked VOID.
G. Nominations will be conducted and closed at the October meeting and elections of all officers/directors shall take place at the annual meeting held in the month of November, with terms of become effective January 1.
H. The Secretary shall send to the ApHC a copy of the annual meeting minutes within thirty days after said meeting.
I. Questions on rules and procedures not resolved here will be resolved with Roberts Rules of Order.
V. AMENDMENTS
A. Proposed amendments to the Bylaws will be submitted to the Secretary no later than October 1. The secretary shall submit all proposed amendments to the Executive Board for their consideration. The proposed amendments and the recommendation of the Board will appear in the notice of the annual meeting.
B. Proposed amendments will be brought to the floor at the annual meeting in the same form as originally presented by the author. Once on the floor for discussion, the author may change the wording of the proposed amendment without a vote of acceptance of the changes by the membership, provided that any such changes shall conform to Roberts Rules of Order for changes.
C. Amendments to Bylaws must be voted on at the annual meeting, and shall require a 2/3 vote of all members in good standing, present and voting to pass.
VI. INDEMNIFICATION
A. The GSAA shall indemnify to the fullest extent permitted by the New Hampshire Nonprofit Corporation Law any person who is made, or threatened to be made, a party to an action, suite, or proceeding, whether civil, criminal, administrative, investigative, or otherwise (including an action by or in the same name of the GSAA), by reason of the fact that the person is or was a director or officer of the GSAA or serves or served at the request of the GSAA as a director or officer of any other corporation. The entitlement of any person to indemnification hereunder and the amount of the indemnification shall be determined in accordance with the procedures and other provisions set forth in the New Hampshire Nonprofit Corporation Law in effect at the time of the determination.
GRANITE STATE SHOW & RIDE RULES
It is the responsibility of the individual to be familiar with the Appaloosa Horse Club Inc. and The Granite State Appaloosa Association rules and regulations.
All shows will be run by the ApHC show rules, or the NHH & TA rule book in accordance with affiliated agreement.
Provide a minimum of 4 hours club service-this can be by working or showing at the GSAA horse show, or any GSAA event. If work is done at the GSAA event you must sign up with the committee chairperson when work is completed. If you are working for someone else you must indicate that on the committee chair’s sheet. Hours are in 30 minute worked increments and will only be counted as such.
Show Circuit Requirements. Weanlings are not required to have a minimum number of shows to get YEA in any of the circuits offered.
YEA will be accumulated for Regional, Instate and Open shows, but may not be combined.
Exhibitors must be a member in good standing no later than 48 hours prior to a show. Members showing on the Open Circuit must return a form signed by the Show Secretary no more than 30 days following the show. Forms are available from the GSAA website for the Open Division.
If a horse is co-owned, both owners must be members of GSAA for points to count and YEA given. Family membership is defined by the ApHC.
POINT SECRETARY-Regional, Instate and Open
The Regional Point Secretary is responsible for reporting World Qualifiers to the ApHC by the required date.
Keep records of members and horses points at GSAA and approved shows. Maintain the registration on Appaloosas. Youth and Non-Pro members and post standings during the year. Year-end awards must be published in the gazette and the standings audited by the Board.
Mid year point standings must be published in the Gazette (dependant on results reaching Point Secretary).
Point charts must be made available at the midyear meeting and at shows if available.
Point secretary must require a copy of the papers on the horse, showing ownership, front and back, and a copy of any leases. A copy of the ApHC NP card and Youth card are required if showing on the regional/national circuits.
GRANITE STATE APPALOOSA POINT SYSTEM
The Granite State point system begins January 1st through October 31st.
GSAA AWARDS AND CLASSIFICATIONS
I. TRAIL CIRCUIT:
1. The GSAA Trail Circuit is open to registered appaloosa horses only. The nomination keeper prior to any ride to be counted for mileage must receive a completed nomination form and the correct nomination fee. Copies of the horse’s ApHC papers (front& back) must be submitted with the nomination form.
2. All owners, lessees or riders must be GSAA members in good standing before mileage will be accrued.
3. The Trail Circuit will consist of two divisions: Pleasure and Distance. Any or all of the following types of rides will qualify for mileage:
Pleasure Division: Distance Division:
Pleasure rides (judged or unjudged) Competitive Rides
Hunter Paces Endurance Rides
4. All awards will be earned by horse/rider combination in each division with mileage accruing on each horse/rider combo separately. Mileage will be earned at rides held from Jan 1st through OCTOBER 31st and is not transferable between divisions. Any mileage earned by a GSAA member at a GSAA sponsored ride will be doubled towards year-end awards.
5. Award Category
Highest Mileage: Award will be presented in each division to the qualified horse/rider combo that accrues the most mileage in the present year. To qualify for these awards, a horse/rider combo must participate in a minimum of two Pleasure or two Distance rides and a GSAA sponsored ride (if offered).
6. Completed and signed trail ride mileage forms must be submitted to the mileage keeper within 30 days of a ride and must be accompanied by a flyer or advertisement of the ride. Mileage forms are available from the mileage keeper, GSAA website or in the newsletter and may be photocopied.
7. Mileage will be printed in the newsletter.
8. The cut-off date for any discrepancies in mileage for year-end awards or mileage accrued will be 15 days after the final mileage totals are printed or posted on the Granite State Appaloosa association website.
II. LOGGING HOURS AWARD
Awards will be presented to members logging hours riding Appaloosas registered with the ApHC. All hours must occur while a member of GSAA. Log forms provided by the GSAA secretary, or found on the GSAA website, must be maintained and turned in to the GSAA secretary for certification of hours logged, it will then be returned to the rider.

INSTATE:
Instate YEA’s be given to the following: Weanlings, Yearlings, Two Year Olds, Three Year Old & Over Mares, Geldings and Stallions. Appaloosa Pleasure English and Western will count for youth as well, Youth Showmanship, Youth Western Equitation, Appaloosa Jr. to Ride and Appaloosa Pleasure English Championship and Western Championship.
High Point Youth for Instate must have shown in Junior to Ride, Appaloosa Pleasure English and/or Western. Youth must have pinned in at least two of the above classes to earn a YEA.
In order for members and point nominated horse/rider to receive YEA's on the Instate circuit, they must show and place 1-6 in that particular class at a minimum of 3 Instate horse shows. If unable to attend 1 (only) Instate show, you may elect to provide a minimum of 4 hours GSAA club service. This can be done by working any GSAA horse show, or event, banquet applies. If work is done at the GSAA event you must sign up with the committee chairperson when work is completed. If you are working for someone else you must indicate that on the committee chair’s sheet. Hours are in 30 minute worked increments and will only be counted as such.
High Point Horse for Instate must accumulate the most points in the English Pleasure, Western Pleasure, and Halter classes. If a tie occurs, the deciding factor will be based on the highest points accumulated in Halter.
Members who exhibit in the instate Classes at our GSAA Instate Show will receive double points, in only the Instate Classes (if offered).
Instate Circuit YEA offered and counted will be governed by the GSAA and NHH & TA rule books.
Grand Champion at halter or pleasure will receive 3 extra points. Reserve Champion will receive 2 extra points.
REGIONAL:
Only classes offered at the GSAA Regional Color Caper Horse Show will be eligible for a regional year-end award. These classes must be offered at three (3) regional ApHC affiliated shows during the show season in order to be eligible for a year-end award.
In Order for members and point nominated horse/rider to receive YEA’s on the Regional circuit, they must place 1-8 under a minimum of 8 judges, the GSAA-Color Caper Review being one of the qualifying regional shows. If a member cannot show at the GSAA regional show, they may elect to provide a minimum of 4 hours GSAA club service. This can be done by working at any GSAA horse show, or event, banquet applies. If work is done at the GSAA event you must sign up with the committee chairperson when work is completed. If you are working for someone else you must indicate that on the committee chair’s sheet. Hours are in 30 minute worked increments and will only be counted as such.
Champions of each class and division will receive prizes for which the value will be decided annually by the Board of Directors. Any tie for year-end Champion or Reserve Champion will be broken by the placing in that class or division at the GSAA Regional show for that year. There will be no Co-Champion or Co-Reserve Champions.
In N/P performance classes only (i.e. n/p trail, n/p working hunter, n/p reining, n/p western riding, n/p jumping) points will accumulate on each horse/rider combination.
Y/E HIGH POINT REGIONAL HORSE
This award will go to the horse that accumulated the highest number of points in all Appaloosa performance classes offered at affiliated shows that do not restrict the rider in any form. The rider or handler does not need to be the same for the show season. The Horse must show in halter or hunter in hand and at least three different performance classes. (No game classes will be counted as performance classes).
Y/E HIGH POINT REGIONAL-OPEN GAME HORSE
This award will go the horse that accumulated the highest number of points in all Appaloosa Game Classes offered at affiliated shows that do not restrict the rider in any form. The rider or handler does not need to be the same for the show season. The horse must show in at least three different game classes.
Each horse must be registered with the ApHC and be owned by a member in good standing of the GSAA to show on the Regional circuit.
Youth Division points are accumulated for the youth only and all ApHC classes offered at affiliated regional shows are counted for High Point youth awards. For a Youth to receive Regional Points, a youth has to own their horse to show in an affiliated regional show and to receive High Point awards.
Non-Pro Division - Rider must show proof of membership in the ApHC, provide a copy of the front and back of the horse’s registration papers proving that the N/P owns the horse.
Any regional ApHC show, which has been pointed by GSAA, may be use for accruing regional points. The ApHC affiliated pointed regional shows are (2) Maine, (1) Massachusetts (1) New Hampshire, (1) Vermont and (1) Connecticut shows.
YEA’s OPEN CIRCUIT: Based on one horse/one rider combination
•High Point Walk Trot YEA - over all Walk Trot classes only
•High Point Youth YEA - over all youth classes only
•High Point Adult YEA - over all Adult classes only
•High Point Horse YEA – over all open classes only-(must have pinned in halter).
*NEW for 2008*High Point Leadline YEA - over all Leadline classes only
In order for members to receive YEA's in the Open Division they must show at the GSAA Open show (if offered) or provide four hours of club service-this can be by working at the GSAA horse show, or any GSAA event. If work is done at a GSAA event you must sign up with the committee chairperson when work is completed. If you are working for someone else you must indicate that on the committee chair’s sheet. Hours are in 30 minute work increments and will only be counted as such.
The Open Circuit is for Non Appaloosa classes only. You must show in at least 3 Open shows and pin in your respective division, in order to receive a YEA’s in a division. You must pin in 3 classes in that division in order to be counted towards a High Point Open Division award.
Open show circuit is open to all breeds of Horse or Pony.
Youth Classes - A youth will be classified by each individual show bill.
GRANITE STATE APPALOOSA POINT SYSTEM
POINT CALCULATIONS: HORSE/YOUTH/NON-PRO
A. The number of horses/youth/non-pro/trail rider, in each class, will determine the number of points awarded, i.e.: First place in a class of 13 will receive 13 points, second place 12 points, etc.
B. Grand Champion at halter or pleasure will receive 3 extra points. Reserve Champion will receive 2 extra points.
